We’ve all heard stories of remodeling projects gone bad – nightmarish tales of mess, inconvenience, unreliable contractors, hidden pricing. Is it any wonder most people dread the thought of undertaking a home improvement project? But homeowners who do their homework upfront and understand exactly what their project entails can save themselves angst, stress, and maybe even some money in the process.
The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), whose core purpose is to advance and promote the remodeling industry’s professionalism, product, and vital public purpose, has set forth a number of steps homeowners can – and should – take to best prepare for any type of home remodeling project. Before undertaking your next home improvement or remodeling project, keep the following guidance in mind.
- Decide what you want in terms of design, usability, and function. A bathroom, for example, can be beautiful and functional at the same time. Visit home design websites for ideas.
- Learn all you can about the project. What work is involved in a bathroom remodel? Based on your requirements, what is the cost and average timeline to complete? What will materials cost? Lastly, what return can you expect on your investment as it relates to other home values in your neighborhood?
- Align your budget. Make sure the money you have budgeted to spend includes every possible expense item, including the unforeseen (contingencies).
- Find a qualified, professional remodeler. Get referrals, check authoritative sites online for valid reviews and recommendations, look for remodelers with certifications and other credentials. Have potential contractors explain to you how their process will work. You may even want to visit a job site of a remodeler you are seriously considering.
- Get a thorough quote/contract. When seeking a quote: 1) tell the remodeler how much you are willing to spend so the remodeling plan fits within your budget and 2) get everything in writing – for everyone’s protection. In addition to time and materials, a quote should include payment terms, project timeline, contractor responsibilities, and change order requirements. A detailed quote may eventually become a contract for work, so this document should address all terms completely.
- Select your products and materials. Home improvement stores and design centers present what may seem to be countless options. Don’t get blinded by the glitz and glamour of it all, or you may wind up overrunning your budget before the project even gets started. When selecting products, keep quality, style, function, and price in mind. The availability of your selections is also critical if your project timeline is to remain on track.
When you take the time to thoroughly prepare for your upcoming home renovation project, the entire process goes more smoothly for everyone. And you will be more assured of securing the best home remodeler for your project, one who understands your requirements and will work professionally to meet them to the best of his or her ability.
