Laundry storage | Sovereign Construction

A home is a work in progress. Whether you’ve been there for years or have just moved in, there never seems to be enough space for everyone’s “stuff.” One of the easiest ways to improve the functionality of your home is to assess your storage capacity and consider creative ways to add more. Certain areas in your home lend themselves to this task better than others. With a bit of inspiration, you can target and transform these areas to ensure you get the most from the space you already have.

1. Closets
Closets come to mind first when considering storage, in particular bedroom closets, where there never seems to be enough room for clothes. Double the amount of clothing you can hang by using two rods instead of just one. With one placed higher and a second placed at the right height below, you can hang twice as many articles. Built-in cabinetry or pull-out bins are great for storing socks, shoes, and undergarments. Similarly, stacked shelving overhead adds space for seasonal items you use less frequently.

2. Laundry Room
The laundry room is often an afterthought in most homes. While it serves an essential function, the space is not often used to its fullest potential. When it’s time to replace laundry appliances, buy energy-efficient front-loading models. This allows you to add a tabletop surface over them which can be used to fold clothes. Hang cabinets on the sides and above to store cleaning products.

3. The Kitchen
Who doesn’t need more storage in their kitchen! Add cabinetry below work surfaces wherever possible. If space allows, a minimal renovation could turn a blank wall into a pantry. Even if wall space is limited, a narrow pantry will still provide extra room for small items, such as spices or canned goods. A walk-in pantry is even better, as it may fit kitchenware and small appliances, as well as provide food storage.

4. The Garage
Garages are often dumping grounds for everything you don’t want inside your house. Organize your garage by installing cabinets and open cubbyhole shelves for tools, car accessories, and lawn care items. Pegboards on walls also make organizing tools simple and space-savvy. Most people neglect the area above garage doors, but simple wooden shelves installed to hang over the garage door’s roller tracks add a whole new space for storing seasonal items.
