Start of a GardenAs winter snows melt and give way to warmer spring temperatures, we revel in the first flower of the season to appear in our garden—the crocus, with its brilliant shades of purple, yellow, and white. This effortless perennial leads us to think ahead to the longer growing and gardening season. While crocuses can pop up just about anywhere, with a bit of planning and effort, you can show off all types of plants and flowers wherever you like to add color and beauty you will enjoy for months.

A good first step when undertaking any type of garden project is to install one or more planting structures. A freestanding or wall trellis, fence, arbor, pergola, or raised plant bed are all good options to consider. Some plant supports are purely decorative and serve as a focal point, while others serve to delineate boundaries and enclosures or filter sunlight. An obvious and well-organized structure not only makes a garden visually pleasing but helps to maintain the life of the flowers and other plants that thrive best in certain sunlight or nearby other species of flora.

Strategically placed containers also let you add touches of color and design for maximum effect. Containers come in all shapes and sizes. Because of that, they are an excellent option for a variety of spaces large and small. Place them on decks and patios, near garage doors, even directly in mulch beds. Fill them with plants—flowers or vegetables—that will thrive in the average temperatures and other weather conditions for your region, and locate them where sun and shade conditions are best for the particular plant.

Different types of plants require different support structures, depending on how much height and weight the plant will grow to. Dainty morning glories weigh less than woody vine plants, and, by July and August, tomato plants will be full grown and bearing heavy fruit. Make sure that whatever type of trellis, arbor, or other structure you use will be strong and sturdy enough to support a full-grown plant and that it is made of a weatherproof material. That could be a specialty metal or wire structure or a wood structure that has been painted and/or properly treated.

The right combination of plant structures in your yard and garden not only improves overall aesthetics, they help maximize the lifespan of everything you grow.
